On 16 June, from 9:00 am in the Assembly Hall of the School of Engineering of the University of Valencia (ETSE-UV), the conference on Data, Information and Knowledge will take place as part of the activities organised by the artificial intelligence research group IDAL and the Pagoda Chair, subsidised by the Regional Ministry of Participation, Transparency, Cooperation and Democratic Quality, to raise awareness of the latest trends among Valencian companies.
From a business point of view, experts from various fields will discuss how to make the transition from data to information and from there to knowledge. Without going any further, the amount of data collected in all areas, whether structured in the form of numbers or in the form of text and images, is growing all the time. However, having data does not mean having information, let alone knowledge.
The talks and round table discussions, given by both researchers and company technicians, will deal with medical, social, technological, public administration, tourism and open data topics, among others. Participants include, among others, the Diputación de Albacete, Valencia City Council, the Ministry of Defence, the University of Valencia, and the companies Zeus, Deepsense, Bosonit, Pangeanic and Ford Valencia. The full programme and access to registration, which is free of charge, can be consulted on the IDAL website (https://idal.uv.es/datos_6/).
IDAL member Prof. José D. Martín alongside Prof. Paulo J. G. Lisboa from Liverpool John Moores University and Dr. Alfredo Vellido from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya are organizing a special session for the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, to be held virtually from 18th to 22nd July 2021. The title of the special session is “Transparent and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) for Health”. The deadline for paper submission is 15th January. IDAL has contributed in the conferences “Open Science for Citizens and Country Development” with a conference titled Data Science, the new environment for the forthcoming society”, presented by Rafael Magdalena and held at Aras de los Olmos (Valencia) as a session of Seasonal Universities program from the University of Valencia. This program aims to bring the public university close to the countryside of the Comunitat Valenciana, taking knowledge from researcher and Academy to country citizens. This Seasonal University deal with current news themes of interest for the country towns, and are free for residents thanks to the support of the Diputacion of Valencia.
The Seasonal Universities are a meeting point for lectures, professionals, students, technician and politicians, and also for citizens interested on their own town and country. This is an initiative open to the broad public, expecting to transfer the know-how of the university to the people, to foster the presence and commitment of the UV with the country and bring research, training and knowledge beyond the classroom.
The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Valencia organises next month a cycle of conferences on Cosmic Architecture in which several professors of the IDAL Group participate. The conferences will be held online and are recognized as 1 free choice ECTS credit.
Dates of the conferences: November 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2020 at 7:00 pm

The IDAL group together with the PAGODA Chair of the University of Valencia has organised an online seminar on “Data Processing and Rights Guarantee”. The seminar was held on 6th October, and was attended by several experts in the field of data analysis and law, who spoke on issues related to data protection, and the use of artificial intelligence in various fields of industry and healthcare.
IDAL member José D. Martín gave the second talk of the Seminars on Mathematics for Challenges in Technology and Society MathChats at Universitat Politècnica de València (Mathchats). The talk gave an overview of classical Machine Learning and its connection with Quantum Computing and Quantum Information as the basis for Quantum Machine Learning, a novel but very active field of research: https://mathchats.webs.upv.es/2019/12/mathchat-on-friday-january-27th-machine-learning-in-the-classical-and-quantum-realms-prof-jose-d-martin-guerrero-idal-department-of-electronic-engineering-universitat-de-valencia-spain/
The past 26th of June, IDAL organized a successful conference on the current situation of the Artificial Intelligence, sponsored by Balearia. The session had 4 panels of discussion and a conference, which was the starting point of the Chair Universidad-Empresa of the company Balearia, in line with research in the field of artificial intelligence. Some of the companies involved were Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME), Capgemeni, CEPSA, Telefónica and Orange.
IDAL member José D. Martín gave a talk entitled “Quantum Machine Learning: When Physics Flirted with Machine Learning, and They Fell in Love” last February 20th. The talk is part of the thematic semester on Quantum Mathematics organized by the Institute for Mathematics and Applications (IMAC) of Universitat Jaume I.
IDAL member José D. Martín is involved in the organization of the special session “Societal Issues in Machine Learning: When Learning from Data is Not Enough” at the renowned European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks, Computational Intelligence and Machine Learning (ESANN’09) that will take place in Bruges, Belgium from 24 to 26 April 2019. The special session is co-organized with Dr. Davide Bacciu (University of Pisa,Italy), Dr. Battista Biggio (University of Cagliari, Italy), Prof. Paulo J. G. Lisboa, (Liverpool John Moores University, UK), Luca Oneto (University of Genoa, Italy) and Alfredo Vellido (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain).
