IDAL holds an event about Open Data

On the 27th of September, IDAL organized the event “Open Data: new challenges for Society” at the School of Engineering of the University of Valencia. The event was focused on explaining the advantages of open data for society. In the event, different speakers participated from both technological firms as well as public organisms, which shared their knowledge on data science.

Data science is revolutionising many aspects of society. Open and shared data are resulting in great changes in business models, as well as in the way of understanding the government. In the Open Data Conference of 27 September at the ETSE-UV all these issues were explained and we deepen on the different perspectives in the field of study.
Open Data generate a cycle of richness and transparency that benefits society as never seen before. New development and management models appear by using this kind of data that has not stopped growing in volume and diversity during the last years. They are data related to people, societies, firms, public organisms, etc. and that are available to be used.
Among others, the participants of the event were the Autonomous Secretary for Transparency, Zulima Pérez Seguí; Pilar Campíns Falcó, Vice-Principal for Research of the Universitat de València; and Emilio Soria Olivas, Full University Professor of the Universitat and representation of Tinámica, Wolfram Alpha and GMV.

Stay at LJMU working on Quantum Clustering

José D. Martín enjoyed a research stay at the Department of Applied Mathematics of the Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), UK, working with the group led by Professor Paulo Lisboa. Jose was granted by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Science and Sport within the Program for Senior Researchers; he stayed from May to September working on different issues related to Quantum Machine Learning, with special emphasis on Quantum Clustering, where relevant progresses have been made, enhancing the original formulation especially in terms of dealing with non-spherical structures and fluctuations in the density of data points, thus finding a natural number of clusters.

Carlo Barbieri gets his PhD

Last July 18th, Carlo Barbieri got a PhD with the work entitled “Anemia management in End Stage Renal Disease patients undergoing dialysis: a comprehensive approach through machine learning techniques and mathematical modeling”. This research work has been carried out within the framework of the close collaboration between Fresenius Medical Care (FME) and IDAL. The PhD was supervised by IDAL members José D. Martín and Emilio Soria as well as by Prof. Bernard Canaud, Chairman of the FME Medical Board for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The breakthrough research conducted by Carlo was shown up in his excellent viva, that was qualified as Excellent Cum-Laude, the maximum grade for a PhD thesis. The panel of examiners was chaired by Dr. Stefano Stuard (Vice President at FME Europe, Middle East and Africa); Dr. Marcelino Martínez (University of Valencia) was the Secretary of the panel, and Dr. Ignacio Díaz was the external examiner. Congratulations Carlo for your great work!

Prof. Emilio Soria presents a conference about Big Data in Social Sciences

Prof. Emilio Soria presented on 14th of June an introductory conference regarding Big Data and data analysis in the 2.0 society invited by the Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Valencia. The available sources of information have experimented a notable growth which can not be ignored by the social analysis. Prof. Emilio Soria discussed during the conference under this premise the applications, uses and potential of the Big Data analysis for Social Sciences and the investigation of social phenomena

Prof. Emilio Soria presents a conference at the Economics Faculty of the University of Valencia

Prof. Emilio Soria will present an interesting conference about “Big Data and Predictive Analytics: the data business” at the Economics Faculty of the University of Valencia next 13th of May. Big data is growing fast as organizations devote technology resources to tapping the terabytes of data flowing into their organizations and externally in social media data and other sources. Prof. Emilio will show how to make profit of this data and what does this all mean for business intelligence users and systems.

IDAL organises an event about Big Data

The past 12th of April, IDAL organised the event “Big Data and Predictive Analytics: new opportunities for industry and society”, at the School of Engineering. The event was focused on the application of Data Science techniques to real problems. The event was held by several relevant figures of the industry, who exposed to the public their experiences and their vision onto the future of the Big Data topic. The event was sponsored by the consultancy companies TINÁMICA, EVERIS, GMV and CAP GEMINI.

Emilio Soria becomes Full Professor

Today, February the 11th is a celebration day at IDAL. Our beloved Emilio got a Full Professorship at the University of Valencia; the decision was made unanimously by the panel of professors who evaluate his application, after a brilliant presentation of his CV, teaching project (dealing with Signal Processing) and research project (focused on Deep Learning). We all are happy and proud of you Emilio, congrats from your IDAL friends.

IDAL setting up new collaboration research with QUTIS group

From 18th to 20th January 2016, IDAL member José D. Martín visited the research group Quantum Technologies for Information Science (QUTIS). QUTIS is a group led by Prof. Enrique Solano conducting cutting-edge research in the field of Quantum Technologies. During his visit, José D. Martín gave a lecture on Machine Learning and its connections with Quantum Technologies and worked on setting up a research collaboration between the two groups, as hopefully will be the case.

ESANN is coming closer… and IDAL will be there

As it is traditional, the last week of April, the charming city of Bruges (Belgium) will see another edition of the European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks, Computational Intelligence and Machine Learning (ESANN). IDAL will participate with three papers and a special session on “Physics and Maching Learning: emerging paradigms”, co-organized by IDAL member José D. Martín.
