Carlo Barbieri gets his PhD

Last July 18th, Carlo Barbieri got a PhD with the work entitled “Anemia management in End Stage Renal Disease patients undergoing dialysis: a comprehensive approach through machine learning techniques and mathematical modeling”. This research work has been carried out within the framework of the close collaboration between Fresenius Medical Care (FME) and IDAL. The PhD was supervised by IDAL members José D. Martín and Emilio Soria as well as by Prof. Bernard Canaud, Chairman of the FME Medical Board for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The breakthrough research conducted by Carlo was shown up in his excellent viva, that was qualified as Excellent Cum-Laude, the maximum grade for a PhD thesis. The panel of examiners was chaired by Dr. Stefano Stuard (Vice President at FME Europe, Middle East and Africa); Dr. Marcelino Martínez (University of Valencia) was the Secretary of the panel, and Dr. Ignacio Díaz was the external examiner. Congratulations Carlo for your great work!

IDAL setting up DISMOD consortium towards AKIPREV project

Dr. José D. Martín on behalf of IDAL attended the kick-off meeting of DISMOD, an international consortium involving medical and technological partners, very relevant in their respective fields. The meeting was held in Madrid last March 8th, and as a result of it, DISMOD will make the necessary arrangements to apply for a project whose tempative acronym is AKIPREV. The final result of AKIPREV will be a tool to predict the probability of undergoing Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), thus helping nephrologists in their daily routine since AKI is a very unpredictable injury at present.

Emilio Soria becomes Full Professor

Today, February the 11th is a celebration day at IDAL. Our beloved Emilio got a Full Professorship at the University of Valencia; the decision was made unanimously by the panel of professors who evaluate his application, after a brilliant presentation of his CV, teaching project (dealing with Signal Processing) and research project (focused on Deep Learning). We all are happy and proud of you Emilio, congrats from your IDAL friends.

IDAL setting up new collaboration research with QUTIS group

From 18th to 20th January 2016, IDAL member José D. Martín visited the research group Quantum Technologies for Information Science (QUTIS). QUTIS is a group led by Prof. Enrique Solano conducting cutting-edge research in the field of Quantum Technologies. During his visit, José D. Martín gave a lecture on Machine Learning and its connections with Quantum Technologies and worked on setting up a research collaboration between the two groups, as hopefully will be the case.

IDAL at Valencian Summer School on Machine Learning

IDAL participated actively in the Valencian Summer School on Machine Learning that was held in Valencia during 15th and 16th September 2015. The School was sponsored by the University of Valencia, the Technical University of Valencia, Big ML and Las Naves. Prof. José D. Martín gave a keynote talk entitled “The Future of Machine Learning”, opening the second day of the school.

Dr. Peter Wittek visits IDAL

Dr. Peter Wittek, one of the world-reference researchers in the field of Quantum Machine Learning visited IDAL last 1st and 2nd October. Dr. Wittek is currentl affiliated with ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences (Barcelona, Spain) and the University of Borås (Sweden). He and IDAL set up a collaboration in the framework of a COST action on Computational Learning and Quantum Information Theory (COLQIT). During the visit, Dr. Wittek gave an outstanding talk entitled “Machine Learning and Quantum Physics: Control, Reinforcement Learning, and Using Quantum Resources”.

IDAL at IEEE-ICDM

As in the two previous years, Prof. José D. Martín has been involved in the organization of the workshop “Data Mining in Biomedical Informatics and Healthcare (DMBIH) 2015”, within the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining series (IEEE-ICDM) that will be held from 14th to 17th November in Atlantic City (NJ, USA). Prof. Joan Vila will attend the confence to present the work entitled “Improving mortality prediction in cardiovascular risk patients by balancing classes”.

IDAL INVOLVED IN EXPOCIENCIA 2014

Expociencia is a doors open day organized by the University of Valencia Technology Park with the collaboration of theSchool of Engineering of the University of Valencia. Since 2012, IDAL has participated in this festive day focused on bringing science and technology closer to the broad public, especially children. Last May 24th, we were setting up an activity called “My body is electric” in which attendants saw how some of their electric biosignals were acquired and processed.

IDAL MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN SMARTPIF REVIEW MEETING

IDAL members José D. Martín, Juan Gómez, Pablo Escandell and José Mª Martínez participated in the review meeting of SMARTPIF project (www.smartpif.eu) that was held at INESCOP premises (Elda, Alicante) last March 11th. All SMARTPIF partners, the Project Officer and an external reviewer attended this meeting with the purpose of assessing the work already done in the project and the plans for the second period.
